How fast you learn a new skill depends heavily on the skills and knowledge you already have and could be influenced by everything you’ve done up until this point in life.

A skill you learnt as a kid, say running or catching a ball, could make it easier to learn a similar skill as an adult.

Any complex skill, such as playing a sport, playing chess, learning an instrument or a talking a new language, consists of many sub-skills.

Some of the sub-skills we see over and over again, and these can be thought of as foundational skills.

Such skills are especially important to learn well, as they make it easier to learn many other skills in the future.

What is a foundational skill?

Foundational skills are skills we see over and over again, as essential parts of performing any skill well.

There are foundational physical skills such as running, jumping, flexibility, balance and hand-eye coordination.
